Nieuwkoopse plassen

Knoop Baggerwerken has been working on implementing the ‘Digging Peat Holes in de Nieuwkoopse Lakes’ specifications since December 2011. The project was commissioned by the Rhineland Higher Water Board and is being carried out in collaboration with the Society for the Preservation of Nature in the Netherlands. The goal of the project is to improve the water quality of the Nieuwkoopse Lakes and to successively restore the natural environment. We completed a number of activities, including the clearing of woods, digging of peat holes, cutting of reeds and construction of dams.

The activities contained in the specifications have been performed to full satisfaction. Ultimately, approx. 5.0 hectares of peat holes were dug and 600 ares of woods were cleared. The process of slowly having the peat holes silt up with water plants, flotants and ultimately swamp forest has been re-initiated.
